The aim of this course is to gain close familiarity with the imagination and artistry of Homer's Iliad, surely one of the most enduring masterpieces of Greek literature. To that end, we will read a substantial amount in Greek, the rest in English translation, with attention to the epic language, structure, themes, conventions and values of the entire poem. Selected secondary readings in Homeric criticism and other relevant materials will be discussed weekly.
